Hick’s Law says the time someone needs to make a decision grows with the number of options they face. More choices mean a slower decision, not just a harder one.
Think of a menu with six dishes against one with sixty. Both can feed you. Only one lets you order in under a minute.
This is one of the oldest findings in experimental psychology. It is also one of the most over-quoted in web design.
W. E. Hick published the original work in 1952, followed by Ray Hyman a year later. Together they gave the effect its name.
The experiments were deliberately simple. Participants responded to lamps lighting up, with one key per lamp.
Reaction time rose with the number of possible lamps. Crucially, it rose logarithmically rather than in a straight line.
That distinction matters commercially. Going from four options to eight costs you far less than the doubling suggests.
Design articles often reduce this to “fewer choices are always better”. The evidence does not support that.
A review in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology sets out where the law weakens. Practice, very large option sets, and how naturally options map to responses all interfere.
Practice matters most for repeat customers. Someone who knows your navigation is not slowed the way a first-time visitor is.
So treat it as a design instinct rather than a formula. Cutting your catalogue in half will not halve anyone’s decision time.
The effect appears anywhere a visitor must pick from a visible set. Some of those places are obvious and some are not.
Main navigation is the clearest case. A menu with twenty top-level links slows every single visit.
Product variations are another. Fourteen colour swatches on one page is a decision, not a convenience.
Shipping options at checkout count too. Offering five delivery speeds slows the moment you least want slowed.
Even filter panels can overwhelm. Twelve collapsed filter groups is a decision about which decision to make first.
Small add-ons are the exception worth protecting. An impulse purchase works precisely because it needs almost no thought.
The useful response is rarely to sell fewer things. It is to present them in smaller steps.
Categories turn one large decision into two small ones. Choosing a department, then a product, is faster than scanning everything at once.
Faceted navigation does the same job dynamically. The shopper narrows the set themselves before comparing anything.
Defaults help as well. A pre-selected sensible option removes the decision entirely for people happy to accept it.
Order the options deliberately too. Placement changes what gets chosen, which is why the anchoring effect matters here.
Sometimes the right move is to remove the deadline rather than the options. Not every decision has to happen now.
A save or wishlist button lets someone park two candidates and continue. The comparison happens later without pressure.

That reframes the whole problem. You are not reducing choice, you are removing the need to resolve it immediately.
Product pages quietly stack up decisions. Size, colour, quantity, delivery, and warranty can all appear at once.
Order them so the most important choice comes first. Size before colour usually matches how people actually think.
Hide the rare options behind a link rather than showing everything. Most shoppers never need the specialist variant.
Watch your add to cart rate as you simplify. It responds faster to these changes than overall conversion does.
These two get confused, and the fixes are completely different. Both make a visit feel slow.
Page speed is a technical problem measured by Core Web Vitals. You fix it with images, caching, and code.
Decision speed is a design problem. A page can load instantly and still stall the person reading it.
Check both before blaming either. A fast site with a confusing layout looks identical in the sales figures.
Delay costs more at payment than anywhere else. The customer has already decided, so every question is friction.
Cart abandonment already averages 70.22% before you add anything. Extra decisions push that number the wrong way.
Cut choices to the ones that genuinely matter. Two shipping options and a clear guest checkout path beat a wall of alternatives.
That is the core of frictionless checkout. Fewer forks in the road, fewer chances to stop.
Stored payment details take this furthest. One-click checkout removes almost every remaining decision from the final step.
Imagine a WooCommerce store called Pennard Tea, selling loose leaf tea and brewing kit. They stock 240 products.
Their main menu lists 18 links across teas, equipment, gifts, and information. Everything is visible at once.
The homepage shows 24 featured products with no grouping. Checkout offers four delivery speeds.
Nothing here is broken exactly. Every page loads and every product is findable.
Analytics shows a high bounce rate on the homepage. Visitors arrive, pause, and leave without clicking anything.
A heatmap shows scattered attention across the menu. Nobody is finding an obvious entry point.
Checkout drop-off spikes at the delivery step. That is four decisions where one would do.
Pennard cuts the menu to five top-level items with submenus underneath. The same 240 products remain available.
The homepage drops to six featured items in two clear groups. Delivery becomes standard or express, with express pre-costed.
They also add a save button to product pages. Shoppers torn between three oolongs can park them all.
Conversion moves from just under the 2.03% benchmark to around 2.5%. Nothing was removed from the catalogue at all.
The saved items produce a second benefit later. Pennard can see which teas people hesitated over before choosing.
That is ordinary conversion rate optimization work. The gain came from arrangement rather than from cutting anything.
These two get treated as the same idea. They describe different problems.
Hick’s Law is about speed. It measures how long a decision takes as options multiply.
The paradox of choice is about outcome and feeling. It concerns people deciding nothing, or regretting what they picked.
A slow decision still ends in a sale. A paralysed one does not, which makes the second problem more expensive.
They compound in practice, though. A page that is slow to process is also the page people abandon.
Related effects sit nearby too. The decoy effect shows that how you arrange options changes which one gets picked.
There is no magic number, despite what design articles claim. What matters is that the labels are distinct and predictable.
Five to seven top-level items suits most stores. Push depth into submenus rather than widening the top row.
Test the labels on someone unfamiliar with your range. If they hesitate over where something lives, the wording is the problem.
Rarely, and not because of this law. Range is usually a reason people choose you.
Improve filtering and categorisation first. Most catalogues feel overwhelming because of presentation, not size.
Much less, because familiarity removes most of the delay. Practice is one of the documented limits on the effect.
Design for the first-time visitor anyway. They are the ones who leave when a page is hard to read.
Returning shoppers also arrive with clearer customer intent. They usually know what they came for, so the option count matters less.
Hick’s Law is a reminder that every visible option costs a moment of someone’s attention. The fix is structure rather than deletion, so group and filter instead of cutting your range. Save the real simplifying for checkout, where a slow decision turns into an abandoned one.
